Jack Dorsey departs Bluesky board

Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter, has stepped down from the board of Bluesky, a decentralized social media platform that he had conceptualized and funded in 2019 during his tenure as CEO of Twitter. Bluesky confirmed his departure in a post on the platform and expressed gratitude for his contributions to the project. Dorsey had previously responded negatively when asked if he was still on Bluesky’s board. The reasons for his departure remain unknown, and Bluesky has not provided any further comments on the matter.

Coincidentally, around the same time, a Tech sector executive social activity tracking account on X, called Big Tech Alert, noticed that Dorsey had unfollowed over 2000 people on his account, leaving only three individuals: Elon Musk, Stella Assange (wife of imprisoned WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange), and Edward Snowden (a former NSA contractor and whistleblower). Dorsey’s decision to continue following Musk and endorse X indicates that the two have possibly resolved their differences. In April of the previous year, Dorsey publicly criticized Musk’s management of X and disagreed with the board’s decision to sell the platform to him.

Dorsey initially introduced Bluesky in late 2019 while he was still the CEO of Twitter. He announced that Twitter would be funding a select team of open-source architects, engineers, and designers to develop a standard for decentralized social media. Bluesky’s beta version was not launched until March 2023, and it only became available to the general public on February 7, 2024. According to Bluesky’s own statistics, the platform currently has approximately 5.6 million users.

While the circumstances surrounding Dorsey’s departure from Bluesky are unclear, his decision to step down from the board indicates a shift in his focus and priorities. It remains to be seen how this change will impact the future development and direction of the decentralized social media platform.
