Following the recent Paris upgrade, Tezos-based layer-2 (L2) scaling solutions could now achieve a throughput of millions of transactions per second (TPS). Marking the 16th enhancement of the Tezos protocol, the Paris update went live on the mainnet on June 5. This upgrade has been designed with the primary aim of making the network more rapid and scalable. One of the critical objectives of the upgrade in Tezos’ scalability roadmap was to ensure low transaction fees across the EVM-compatible L2 network Etherlink, even during periods of high demand. Post-upgrade, Etherlink is now more economical than both Arbitrum and Optimism, coupled with an improved user experience (UX), according to Arthur Breitman, one of Tezos’ co-founders.
Arthur Breitman mentioned to that, thanks to the Paris upgrade, Etherlink users would benefit from an enriched UX. He elaborated that the L2 time to finality would now be comparable with Arbitrum One and Optimism but with enhanced L1 publication latency. Etherlink boasts a transaction finality time of 500 milliseconds, with data being posted to the main L1 in about 10 seconds. In comparison, Optimism and Arbitrum One take two minutes and seven minutes, respectively, for finality. Despite these differences in finality, Arbitrum One and Optimism continue to be dominant Ethereum L2 solutions in terms of total value locked (TVL), with Arbitrum One valued at $19.2 billion and Optimism at $7.8 billion.
A significant component of the upgrade is Tezos’ newly implemented Data Availability Layer (DAL), which is engineered to enhance L2 throughput to more than a million TPS. Aimed at encouraging more decentralized network participation, the DAL reduces hardware and bandwidth costs, making it more accessible. With the help of DAL, Tezos’ Smart Rollups are poised to scale, executing millions of TPS in the foreseeable future. In July 2023, Tezos rollups already demonstrated the capability to reach one million TPS by leveraging horizontal scaling.
Arthur Breitman elaborated that this accomplishment was realized by utilizing horizontal scaling abilities, with 1,000 rollup nodes operating in parallel at 1,000 TPS each. The activation of the Data-Availability Layer (DAL) on the mainnet through the Paris upgrade significantly expands Tezos’ capacity to verify the publication of rollup data. Updated TPS figures following the Paris upgrade were still unavailable at the time.
Another enhancement from the Paris upgrade is the reduction of block times from 15 to 10 seconds. This change aims to foster quicker transaction finality and minimize latency during payment processes. Such faster payment confirmations can vastly improve the UX across decentralized applications (DApps) built on the Tezos platform. Breitman emphasized that this new finality has considerably lowered payment latency, making the L1 transactions on Tezos faster.
These accelerated transaction times have been achieved without compromising the network’s integrity and security, addressing one of the critical issues in the cryptocurrency realm known as the blockchain trilemma—a challenge of enhancing scalability without undermining decentralization or security.
